Week of August 22nd

I was so pleased with the first two days of school and I’m excited to see what the rest of the year holds! Now that we’ve all gotten to know each other a little better, it is time to roll up our sleeves and get to work!

This week in science we’ll begin our scientific method unit. I like to begin the year with this unit because I think it’s important for the students to think like a scientist all year long. This week, students will learn to formulate testable research questions. They will also learn to research their topic or problem in order to begin to identify variables. There is no textbook for this unit, so don’t be alarmed when your child does not bring a book home. However, we will take some notes and complete many of the learning activities in their science notebook, so be sure to ask your child to bring it home so you can see what we’re working on.  (Please be sure your child has a notebook and a folder for science this year.)

This week in I-time students will be completing time capsules. These are a great way for me to get to know the students and it’s always fun when I hand them back at the end of the year. Students will work on several items to add to their time capsules, including a self-portrait, personal profile, letter/journal entry to themselves, and a string measuring their height. Students also need to bring a small artifact or trinket from home that is a symbol of their life right now. It could be a cd cover from their favorite cd, a baseball card of their favorite player, a snapshot of their family or friends, etc. It needs to be small enough to fit in a one-gallon ziplock bag, and it has to be something they can live without for the rest of the school year!

I am in need of a few items for a couple of upcoming science activities. I will need Jolly Ranchers for a qualitative observation activity. I need enough for each student to have one Jolly Rancher (99). I also need 4 of the large bags of M&M’s for another lab activity. If you can help by sending in any of these items, I would be grateful!

Please be sure to sign and return the handbook acknowledgement forms from p. 17 in your child’s agenda.

Please contact the office if you are unable to obtain needed school supplies. Mrs. Skaggs has some donated items for students who are in need.

REMINDER: There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day.

If you have not returned enrollment forms to the office, please do so as soon as possible.

FYI- I’ll be taking a class picture out on the playground on Wednesday, weather permitting.

Have a great week! 🙂
